Making Buttermilk

We all know how good buttermilk in a recipe improves the flavor.  Many of my favorite recipes have buttermilk in them like chocolate cake or banana bread.  Sometimes, I want to make one of these recipes but there is no buttermilk in the refrigerator and I do not feel like going to the grocery store.  So what does a cook do?   She makes buttermilk of course and here is how she does it!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 1/2 teaspoons white vinegar

Directions:

      15 minute prep time

  • Place vinegar in a glass measuring cup.
  • Add enough milk to make one cup total liquid.
  • Stir to combine.
  • Let the mixture stand for 10 to 15 minutes (The mixture will begin to curdle)
  • Use as much as needed in the recipe.
  • Refrigerate the left over mixture.
